HIRAETH

VM spent childhood holidays in North Wales, staying in an ancient stone cottage on a mountain called Pen-y-Gaer, overlooking the Conway Valley.  Its ancient fireplace, gas lantern and step ladder up to attic beds are still vivid in her memory.  At night she heard the lonely sound of the hooting owls and the vulnerable bleating of lambs panicking for their mothers – haunting and beautiful sounds to a city child. Hiraeth is a Welsh word expressing nostalgia and longing.
